Today is Teaser Tuesday! In celebration of my impending birthday (and since I haven’t blogged in quite a while), I thought I would add a teaser for #book 2, The Curse of Gold and Ashes.
****Warning! If you haven’t read book 1, Heir to Gold and Ashes, you probably shouldn’t read this. Okay, consider yourself officially warned.****
2017?! Already? Cue the flash-backs…
As you have all noticed, it’s almost a new year! Wow, I know right? Where did the time go? I still find myself writing 2011 on things, and it’s almost 2017? It went by too fast, and has been one of the most exciting years of my life!
NaNoWriMo and the craziness that is my scatterbrain!
Halloween was a bunch of craziness, starting Saturday night with the friends, and ending Monday with the kids.
Yep…that’s me dressed as Ursula, and the best friend is a scarecrow. We had all kinds of shenanigans!
Then on Monday we took the kids in the freezing cold (anything under 60 is freezing to me) and I finally got working on book 2 Yesterday.
As if I didn’t have enough on my plate I entered into this years #NaNoWriMo. For those of you who don’t speak the lingo, that stands for National Novel Writing Month, and Nanowrimo.org hosts a writing event that helps authors, bloggers, and writers alike reach their word count goals.
The word goal that’s set is 50,000 words. You basically have one month to write an entire novel, or in my case, a rough draft of one. My first novel Heir to Gold and Ashes is 100,000 words, give or take a few words, and it took me months to write. So why in the world do I think I can do another in just one month?!
Honestly, it’s because I’ve really been slacking lately and I think Nano will help boost my motivation. I’ve been getting feedback in the last week since my book came out and people already want book two! I have been working on drafting it, but I’ve been so busy and unmotivated I haven’t worked on the sequels much.
That all stops now! Hopefully (key word being hopefully) by the end of the month I will have a fully drafted novel ready for editing!
So, of course, today is November 2nd and what have I done? Have I been planning? Plotting? Setting up an intricate layout for my book? NO! I decided to clean out my room and do a whole new bedroom set. Ughhh, what was I thinking??? Apparently, my brain thought my life wasn’t hectic enough and I needed another project on my plate.
So here I am, writing every chance I get, sanding down nightstands, cutting plywood to fit onto our new bed frame, and painting.
It’s coming together a little better now, but just so you know an Egyptian King and Cal King are NOT the same thing! So when a salesperson tells you an Egyptian King mattress will fit a Cal King frame…They’re WRONG!!
I should seriously know better by now. I guess I’ll never learn!
So after all our Halloween fun, recovering from a candy hangover, and breaking a few fingernails while assembling a bed set, I can finally say I’m ready to get to work!
Wish me luck! Hopefully, the next time I write a blog post it will be because I’m jumping for joy that another book has been written in the #Blackwoodwitchtrilogy
Hello, internet land! My first book went live this week and I got the first paperback in the mail today! As excited as I am, I’m also really nervous! I didn’t think this far ahead. Now I just keep thinking, “What now?”
One thing that has completely blown me away is the amount of love and support I’ve received from friends and family. It’s unreal!! I don’t know how I ever got so lucky to have such amazing people in my life. Thank you all!
While we wait for the e-book to go live (and recovering emotionally from the Walking Dead) I’m doing a giveaway on my Facebook, Here, for a free signed copy of the book! It’s just a little fun with a bunch of unnecessary hashtags to try to get the ball rolling.
If anyone wants to check out the book the paperback is for sale on the publishing website, Barnes and Noble’s online website, and on Amazon! As soon as e-book is available it will be on kindle, iBooks, kobo, and Nook, so I’ll update as soon as it’s ready and we will another giveaway.
I should be back soon to do a new blog as soon as life calms down a little, and maybe I’ll be ready to talk about the horrible life experience that was the season 7 premiere of the walking dead. *sobs*
See you all soon!!!
I couldn’t sleep last night, and no matter what I did, my anxiety grew and grew. Then this morning I woke up with a huge case of the nerves.
Self-doubt and anxiety have clawed their way into my mind.
After reading an email from my publisher about whether or not I want a table of contents, my nerves went into overdrive!!
Do I want a table of contents? Do I need one? What do I do? WHAT DO I DO?!?! Panic then shortly ensued when I realized, I have no clue what I’m doing.
I hate this feeling. The only thing that keeps me sane is the amazing writer group I’m in. I am so grateful to have a great them!
I stumbled upon a blog back in February when I got the wild idea to write a book. I’d never written a book but I’d read thousands. Surely it couldn’t’ be that hard right? And I’m only writing it for me, no one would ever want to publish it, right? It was a nice little dream until I actually thought about publishing.
So I went online in search of wisdom and found She’s Novel. By saying Kristen Kieffer’s blog is a lifesaver is an understatement. I honestly do not think I would have been able to get through all of this without her and the amazing group she created on Facebook.
At times I get anxiety or get stuck on an idea, I go log onto Shesnovel.com and usually find exactly what I’m looking for.
Today’s I came across her blog on self-doubt. I was feeling horrible this morning like I needed to delete everything and never look back again, and then I found her blog on Overcoming writing doubts.
I am so relieved that I’m not the only one that feels this way! I don’t feel alone anymore! Now it’s time to banish those fears and tackle the world!!
Waiting for the dust to settle.
(Warning, there are spoilers in this Blog. If you live in a cave and aren’t caught up on Walking Dead or Game of Thrones, don’t keep reading.)
Happy Wednesday!! The week is halfway over!

Inspiration, Frankenstein, and everything in between..
Hello again! It’s been a busy week so far, but I have just printed out the edited copy of Heir to Golden Ashes (metaphorically singing on the rooftops!). I gotta say this out loud, or I guess typing: there’s nothing better than a hot manuscript fresh off the print! While the printer is making that lovely sound I got to thinking how long it took to get here. I don’t necessarily mean the length of time, but the effort. It was hard! I’m not going to lie and say it was sunshine and rainbows the entire time. I never realized what it really took to get a book onto paper. After months of ideas, late nights, and a little bit of carpal tunnel, I realized…this is hard work!!
Writing is fun. Writing is spontaneous. Writing is also a lot of stress. I asked myself on multiple occasions, “am I even good enough?” and “Do I have what it takes to be a good writer?” But then I realized I would never know unless I tried. One of my favorite quotes says,
“The worst thing you write is better than the best thing you didn’t write.” -Anonymous.
I don’t know about you, but that’s some damn good advice. How was I ever going to know if I was any good if I didn’t give it a chance? The worst thing that could happen is people were going to hate my book, give me a 1 star review, and throw it in the garbage. Yikes, that actually sounds terrible now that I say it. Granted I really don’t want that to happen, but I wouldn’t know unless I tried.
I am not a professional by any means. I have a degree in math and science, NOT in literature. But some of the best writers of our time didn’t have degrees. The only thing you need to write a good book, is an idea, paper, and pen.
Yes, I love the Oxford Comma,,,,,,,, and yes I have read hundreds and thousands of books, but that does not make me a pro. I realized during this process that writers were all readers at some point, right? We all fell in love with literature one way or another, and some of us decided to put our ideas onto paper for others to enjoy.
I had someone ask me the other day if I had a book that inspired me to write. My answer was “Yes, and No.” She said, “well you have to have something that inspires you.” I explained to her that every book I have ever read is inspiration. Every author has a different voice, and a different story to tell, so it is hard to pinpoint any one particular book or author that inspired me.
But there is one book that stands out. One book in particular that opened my eyes to gothic literature and creating worlds.
Are you ready for this? Drumroll please…..
Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. Yep, I fell in love with everything that had to do with reading and writing after I read that tattered old book my mom gave me when I was…well, I don’t even know how old I was. I read that book over, and over, and over again until I knew it by heart. (Yes, I still have the book.) I fell in love with gothic novels, the supernatural, science fiction, and every other horror genre there was after I read Frankenstein.
Now I am writing horror/ gothic genre books, and I don’t know for sure, but I probably never would have had such a passion for the dark and mysterious if it hadn’t been for that book…and probably every Anne Rice novel ever written, but that’s a story for another time.
So, if you’ve read this far. Thank you!! And, I have a question for you. What has inspired you in life? Whether it be reading, writing, music, or polka dancing. What do you think has helped you become who you are today?
First blog post
Wow! If you are reading this, CONGRATULATIONS! You are reading my very first blog post. I know, I know…it sounds a little insane to me too. You may be asking yourself, “Self, how can she write novels but never have written a blog?” Well, to be honest I’m a hermit. And I had no clue where to begin….until now. I can write novel after novel, but I struggle with putting myself out there (wherever ‘there’ is).
I have always loved to write, but never thought to do anything “professionally”. That has all changed. I stopped waiting for the opportunities to come to me, and chased after my dreams. I am excited to announce that my first novel, Heir to Gold and Ashes is in the publishing process! *Happy dance*
In a couple months my new novel will be available to buy through Nook, Kindle, iBooks, and many more! Wow…again! This is a huge accomplishment for me, and I am so excited to share it with everyone.
I would also love to give a shout out to Kristen Kieffer from She’s Novel, and all the AMAZING people in the Your Write Dream Facebook group. I could never have done this without you!!!!
Thank you again for visiting, and come back soon to see what books are coming out next!
